When is whale watching season in Port Townsend?
Whale-watch boats run from Port Townsend when the Salish Sea has whales to find — typically spring through fall, with species shifting by month. Gray whales, humpbacks, and orcas (including transients) are the usual targets. Southern resident orcas are endangered and not a promise. Operators cancel for weather.

Puget Sound Express is the operator the live Blue Mountain site has pointed to for years. Boats leave Port Townsend and work the Strait and Admiralty Inlet. You are on the water for hours. Dress for wind even in July.
What you see depends on the week. Transient (Bigg’s) orcas hunt marine mammals in these waters. Humpbacks have become more common in summer. Gray whales pass in spring. Harbor porpoise, seals, and sea lions fill the gaps. A good captain talks through what is realistic that day.
This is not a San Juan Island lodge week. You do not need to relocate the reunion to Friday Harbor. Book the boat, leave the house after breakfast, and come home for the fire pit.
Kids who get seasick need a plan B — Fort Worden beach or downtown — if the Strait is lumpy. Ask the operator about age, rails, and restrooms before you put a four-year-old on a three-hour trip.

- Drive 20 minutes to Port Townsend and allow extra time for parking near the dock.
- Book the whole group as one party if you can. Reunion counts fill a boat fast in July.
- Motion sickness is common on the Strait. Eat light, bring layers, follow the operator’s boarding rules.
- Wildlife is not scheduled. A good trip is still a day on the water if whales stay distant.
