Summer
Warmest water and the busiest rental calendar. Morning glass beats afternoon wind on most days.

Paddle & bikes
Rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or bike in Port Townsend and stay on the bay instead of driving the peninsula. PTOutdoors is the shop the original Blue Mountain site sent people to.
Signature stops

Why go
The useful put-ins are in Port Townsend, about 15–20 minutes from Chimacum. Port Townsend Bay and the protected edges of Admiralty Inlet are the usual beginner water. Open Strait paddling is a different sport — wind, current, and shipping lanes.
A few hours on the water or on a bike path, then back to the house. You do not need to trailer boats to the reunion.
Once you’re there
PTOutdoors rents kayaks, SUPs, and bikes in Port Townsend. That is the operator on the live Blue Mountain activities page. They know the local water and can say no when the wind is wrong — listen to them.
Calm mornings on the bay are the reunion version of this. A parent who paddles and a kid on a tandem is a real outing. A group of 20 all in kayaks at once is not — split the party or pick a different day.
Bikes are the backup when the Strait is ugly. Port Townsend has enough town riding for an hour. The Olympic Discovery Trail is a longer ride if someone in the group is training, not babysitting.
Protection Island is a wildlife refuge offshore. It is a goal for experienced paddlers with a guide, not a first-hour rental. Ask before you point kids at the horizon.

Trip notes
Drive time from Blue Mountain Retreat in Chimacum: about 15–20 minutes to the launch.
Then come back
Kayaking is an equipment day. You want a shop, not a garage full of wet gear in a rental house.
Blue Mountain Retreat is dry clothes, a dryer, and the woods when you peel off the drysuit. That split — outfitter in town, house in Chimacum — is why the original site listed PTOutdoors at all.
Ways to use a week here
More nearby

about 15–20 minutes
Walkable Victorian downtown, a working waterfront, and enough food and shops for a town day without turning the week into an itinerary.

about 20–25 minutes · ~16 miles
Beaches, bunkers you can explore, and bluff trails at the north end of Port Townsend — the outing the original site always listed first.

about 20 minutes to the dock
Day boats on the Salish Sea from Port Townsend — orcas and other whales in season, booked as a single outing, not a week-long safari.

about 1 hour 45 minutes to Hurricane Ridge
Hurricane Ridge for a mountain day; rain forest and coast if you want a longer drive. One park day, then back to Chimacum.

about 40 minutes
Dungeness Spit, lavender farms in summer, and drier Olympic Peninsula weather — a westbound day that is still shorter than the national park.

you are already here
Farm valley, a corner store, and the quiet town the house actually sits in — groceries, views, and no need to perform tourism.

ferry plus a peninsula drive
Kingston or Bainbridge ferry, SEA, and the 516 map pin — practical arrival notes before anyone puts 512 in the GPS.
Common questions
Drive time, seasons, and what actually fits a family group.
Most groups rent in Port Townsend, 15–20 minutes away, and paddle the bay. Chimacum itself is inland — woods and a pond, not a launch ramp for the Sound.
Usually no. Rental fleets and safety ratios do not absorb 25 people at once. Split the group or book a guided outing well ahead.
Take the shop’s cancellation. Bike downtown or drive to Fort Worden. The house in Chimacum is the dry backup.
